Heavy Duty Towing Where I-80, I-680 and the Turnpike Meet
Heavy duty towing in Youngstown means moving trucks that regular tow trucks cannot lift: loaded tractor-trailers, box trucks, school and charter buses, RVs, dump trucks, and equipment on trailers. Dispatch answers 24/7. Call (330) 542-5961 and we will ask a short list of questions, then give you an honest arrival estimate before we roll.
What to have ready when you call
- Your exact location: interstate or road, direction of travel, mile marker or nearest exit
- The unit: tractor-trailer, box truck, bus, RV, dump truck or equipment, and its weight class
- Whether it is loaded, and with what. Tell us if it is hazmat.
- What is wrong: breakdown, blown tire, flat air, crash, jackknife, rollover or off the road
- Who is paying: the driver, the fleet, an insurer or a broker
If you do not know the mile marker, give us the last exit you passed and the direction you were heading. That is enough to find you.
Youngstown sits on a freight crossroads
Youngstown is the county seat of Mahoning County and lies along the Mahoning River about 5 miles west of the Ohio and Pennsylvania line. Cleveland and Pittsburgh are each about 60 miles away, so the city sits roughly midway between them. Several heavy routes meet here:
- I-80 leaves the Ohio Turnpike northwest of the city and runs east north of Youngstown. This free stretch of about 18.8 miles is the feeder to the Keystone Shortway across northern Pennsylvania.
- I-76 and the Ohio Turnpike pass west and south of the city and continue into Pennsylvania, where the turnpike becomes the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
- I-680 is a 16.43-mile route that runs from I-80 near Austintown, along the southern edge of downtown Youngstown, and south through Boardman to the turnpike. It is tolled at its southern end.
- US 422, US 62 and State Routes 7, 11, 193 and 711 carry local freight to the plants, yards and warehouses in town.
A breakdown on any of these means different traffic, different shoulders and different equipment. We ask where you are first because the answer changes how we set up.
Winter changes everything
Youngstown averages 67.8 inches of snow per season, and the range is wide: 25.2 inches in the lightest season on record and 118.7 inches in 2010 to 2011. The snowiest month on record was December 2010, with 53.1 inches. That is less than the snowbelt closer to Lake Erie, but it is enough to put trucks in ditches and jackknife loads on ramps. Snow and ice also make recovery slower, because a loaded unit on a slick shoulder has to be winched, stabilized and pulled with care. If you are stuck, stay in the cab with your flashers on until the scene is safe.
A river valley with a steel past
The Mahoning Valley grew up on steel. The area's first blast furnace dates to 1803, and the closure of a large part of Youngstown Sheet and Tube on September 19, 1977 is remembered locally as Black Monday. Today the valley's freight is more varied. The former General Motors Lordstown Assembly plant, which built cars from 1966 to 2019, now sits in the Foxconn and Ultium Cells era, and battery cell production began in Lordstown in August 2022. Those sites, the industrial yards along the river and the distribution traffic on the interstates all put heavy trucks on the road at every hour.
Where drivers and fleets stop
The TA Youngstown travel center is at 5400 Seventy Six Drive, on I-80 at exit 223A, and lists 145 truck parking spaces. The Ohio Turnpike runs two service plazas in Springfield Township, Mahoning Valley westbound and Glacier Hills eastbound. When a unit breaks down near one of these, tell us which one. It helps us find you faster.

Common Questions
How much does heavy duty towing cost in Youngstown?
Published rate sheets from other jurisdictions show a heavy tow hook-up around $450 plus $9.50 to $10 per mile, and recovery with a heavy wrecker at roughly $350 to $850 per hour. Distance, load, scene and time of day change the total. We give you a written invoice estimate.
What do I need to tell the dispatcher?
Your exact location (interstate, direction, mile marker or exit), the unit type and weight class, whether it is loaded and with what, what is wrong, and who is paying. If the load is hazmat, say so right away.
Can you tow a loaded semi, or does it have to be unloaded first?
Many loaded semis can be towed as they are, depending on weight, damage and where the unit sits. After a crash or rollover, the load may need to be transferred first. The dispatcher will ask about the load before sending equipment.
Do you handle crashes on I-80 and I-680?
Yes. Accident recovery on the interstates is part of the work, including winching, uprighting, load transfer and clearing debris. Police may control the scene, and we follow their direction.
How fast can you get to me?
It depends on where you are, traffic, weather and what is already on the schedule. The dispatcher gives you an honest arrival estimate on the call and updates you if it changes.
Can you tow a bus or an RV?
Yes. Motorcoaches, school buses, motorhomes and fifth wheels are heavy, tall and often damaged by a hard tow. We use the right method for each and ask about weight, length and any passengers on board.
Why Homeowners Call Heavy Duty Towing Youngstown
Dispatch answers 24/7
Breakdowns do not wait for business hours, so a dispatcher picks up any hour of the day or night.
Honest arrival estimate
The dispatcher gives you a real estimate on the call, based on where you are and what is needed, and tells you if that changes.
Equipment matched to the unit
A bobtail, a loaded reefer, a coach and an excavator on a trailer are different jobs. We send equipment that fits the weight and the scene.
Written estimate before the hook-up
Hook-up, mileage, recovery time and storage are listed on a written invoice estimate so there are no surprises at the yard.
